Rectal Prolapse

 What is Rectal Prolapse?

Rectal prolapse, also known as "rectal descent," is a medical condition that occurs when the large intestine or rectum partially or completely slips from its normal position in the abdomen and protrudes through the rectum or outside it. This type of displacement happens when the muscles and tissues supporting the colon and rectum are damaged, leading to the descent of the intestines.

Symptoms of Rectal Prolapse:

- The appearance of a protrusion outside the anal opening with a noticeable sensation.

- Difficulty with bowel movements.

- Discomfort or pain in the lower abdomen and pressure on the rectum.

- Pain in the rectum accompanied by bleeding.

- Fecal incontinence or leakage of liquid stool from the anal opening.

- Inability to completely empty the rectum during bowel movements.

- Itching in the anal area.

Causes of Rectal Prolapse:

- Gastrointestinal disorders, such as chronic constipation and frequent diarrhea.

- Straining during bowel movements.

- Weakness of the muscles and ligaments in the rectal area.

- Damage to the nerves responsible for controlling rectal muscle tone.

- Neurological issues, such as spinal cord diseases.

Treatment for Rectal Prolapse:

Treatment typically involves various surgical procedures, such as:

- Laparoscopic Abdominal Surgery:

This procedure involves making small incisions and using a tiny camera to perform the surgery.

- Perineal Surgery:

This type of surgery is chosen for older patients or those with other medical conditions. It involves repairing the rectal tissues extending from the anal opening.
